How to Save Your Car Battery from the Pakistani Summer Heat (2026 Guide)
In Pakistan, car batteries typically last only half as long as they do in cooler countries. When temperatures in cities like Hyderabad, Multan, or Sibi cross 45°C, the chemical reaction inside your battery speeds up, causing fluid to evaporate and internal parts to corrode. Here is how you can extend your battery life this summer.
1. Check Electrolyte Levels (For Lead-Acid Batteries)
If you use a standard lead-acid battery (like AGS or Exide), you must check the water levels monthly during summer. Heat causes the distilled water to evaporate. If the plates inside become dry, the battery will fail permanently. Always top up with distilled water, never tap water.
2. Clean Corroded Terminals
Have you seen white or blue "powder" on your battery terminals? That is corrosion. It creates resistance, making it hard for the battery to charge while you drive. You can clean this at home using a mixture of baking soda and warm water with an old toothbrush. Apply a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline) after cleaning to prevent rust from returning.
3. Park in the Shade
This seems simple, but it’s the most effective tip. Parking under a tree or in a garage can lower the temperature under your hood by up to 15°C. This significantly slows down the evaporation of battery fluids and prevents the battery case from swelling.
4. Avoid Short Trips
Every time you start your car, the battery uses a huge amount of energy. The alternator needs about 20 minutes of driving to put that energy back. If you only drive 5 minutes to the local shop and back, your battery remains "undercharged," which shortens its lifespan over time.
5. The "AC First" Rule
In summer, we all want the AC on immediately. However, you should always turn off your AC, lights, and radio before you turn off the engine. This ensures that the next time you start the car, the battery doesn't have to power the heavy AC compressor while trying to crank the engine.
Signs Your Battery is Failing:
- The engine "cranks" or turns over slowly.
- The dashboard lights flicker when you start the car.
- The battery case looks swollen or bloated.
- A "rotten egg" smell coming from under the hood.
